Abstract
One hundred and forty-five people are currently incarcerated in this small, oil-producing Islamic nation, which had a population of 200,390 in 1983. Prisoners who have not yet been convicted are kept separate from convicted prisoners, as are offenders under age 18. Drug addicts go through a five-stage treatment program. Correctional staff receive basic training for 4 to 8 months, depending on their rank. The upper level officers currently go overseas for training because there are so few of them. Lower level officers also receive training in Malaysia or Singapore after completing basic training. The author suggests that small nations in Asia and the Pacific should cooperate and attend workshops organized by developed nations in the region. Tables and 1 figure.
