These 16 issues examine the role of the police in the United Kingdom and critically examine contemporary developments in policing strategy and in the laws relating to police powers.
Abstract
Issues considered include the growing powers and reduced accountability of police, recent proposals for strengthening protection of the rights of accused persons, and the principles found in the 1984 Criminal Evidence Act. Additional papers examine the policing of labor-management disputes, the relationship between community policing and coercive policing, the police and race relations, and procedures for handling citizen complaints against the police. The use of reasonable force, the role of police in cases involving women as victims and perpetrators of crimes, police handling of mentally ill persons, policing technology, and police use of force are also discussed. Author biographies, chapter notes, and index.
