This article considers the rationale for managerial training in conflict management and dispute resolution, the competencies needed, and approaches to teaching these competencies.
Abstract
Because conflict is an inevitable part of organizational life, there is a need for generalist managers who can think broadly about conflict and apply techniques for resolving it toward productive ends. There also is a need for persons who can act as neutrals in negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. Professional competencies needed by conflict managers include a broad range of knowledge and skills in areas related to the dispute context, analysis, intervention, communication, and management processes. This wide range of competencies suggests that an eclectic program is needed that combines theory and practice through classroom lectures and exercises with internships, field or clinical work, and student research. At present, over 300 conflict resolution courses are offered in business degree programs in the United States. 1 note and 24 references.
