The author reports forensic findings in a homicide investigation involving the use of a Sheridan .20-caliber pneumatic air rifle. The victim was a 47-year-old male with multiple visible gunshot wounds to the head.
Abstract
The lethal pellet entered the brain. The single wound in the left frontal-temporal area was the result of a double or piggyback shot, in which a second pellet is chambered behind the first. Microscopy of pellets fired from a test weapon indicates that the individual land and groove markings provide sufficient material for positive comparisons. In addition, the soft lead alloy of the pellets accepts individual toolmarks readily and allows for easy emplacement of fiber marks if the pellet passes through clothing. The case remains unsolved at present and provides evidence of the potential hazards of air-powered weapons. 17 references.
