Much of the diversity in the programs is due to the differing target populations and secondarily to the differing therapeutic orientations. Differences in target populations are apparently due to funding commitments that target those offenders perceived as having the highest community risk. Program descriptions encompass referral, assessment, capacity and staffing, treatment duration and intensity, location, community resource outlets, theoretical orientation and therapeutic services, and evaluation and followup. Although evaluation data were scarce and methodologically weak, there was some indication of program effectiveness. Recommendations are offered for sex offender treatment programs in Canada in each of the program areas surveyed. 12 references and survey questionnaire.
