The School Team Approach Program (STAP) developed by the U.S. Department of Education, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Education Program is a national network of training and resource centers that trains teams of school, community, and volunteer representatives in problemsolving techniques that help schools develop effective programs for youth, with an emphasis on drug and alcohol abuse prevention.
Abstract
The STAP aims at reducing drug and alcohol use and abuse as well as associated disruptive behavior during school hours. The active support of school superintendents and principals is crucial to the success of the STAP. The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Education Program has identified characteristics in a school, a school manager, and an administrative team that increase the effectiveness of the STAP. Thirteen characteristics of a school most likely to be successful with the STAP are listed, along with eight characteristics of a successful administrative team and nine skills required of principals. The addresses of the five centers and national program contacts are provided.
