This document provides overviews of theory and empirical research on major issues currently confronting the criminal justice system.
Abstract
The first part of the book provides overviews of over 50 books and reports in 11 major content areas. These include theories of crime and delinquency causation, including labeling, control, strain, differential association, and social learning theories; longitudinal, cohort studies of delinquency; studies of chronic offenders and crime specialization; delinquency prevention; rehabilitation effectiveness; and rehabilitation versus just desserts approaches to corrections. Other topics covered include determinate sentencing and deterrence, incapacitation, parole, offender classification, and public attitudes toward corrections. In the second part, actual summaries of the selected articles and books, together with bibliographic information, are provided in appendixes corresponding to each overview topic. Appendix references.
