For the second consecutive year, overall serious crimes reported to police increased.
Abstract
An estimated 13.2 million offenses were reported, representing a 6 percent Index crime increase in 1986. Violent crime increased 12 percent: aggravated assault increased 15 percent, murder and robbery both rose 9 percent, and forcible rape rose 3 percent. Property crimes occurring in 1986 rose 6 percent nationwide. Burglary and theft each rose 5 percent, arson was up 6 percent, and motor vehicle theft rose 11 percent. Regional trends showed upswings ranging from 3 percent in the Northeast to 10 percent in the South. Overall, crime was up 4 percent in the Midwest and 6 percent in the West. One Index offense was committed every 2 seconds, one violent crime every 21 seconds, and one property crime every 3 seconds. Of recorded Index offenses, 21 percent were cleared (46 percent of violent crimes and 17 percent of property crimes). During 1986, arrests for all offenses except traffic violations totaled an estimated 12.5 million. The highest volume of arrests was for driving under the influence. Compared to 1985, the number of arrests for all offenses increased 5 percent in 1986. 12 figures.
