The Field Training Program of the Tuscon Police Department (Arizona) is a police selection process that combines prefield and field training and objection evaluations to ensure that the standards of a competent beat officer are met.
Abstract
This training manual delineates the responsibilities of the officer trainee, the field training officer, the field sergeant, and the program coordinator. It provides a schedule for the 13-week program, including quizzes, sequential examinations, and evaluations. The evaluation procedure is explained, and 28 specific police behaviors are described for five areas -- critical performance tasks, other tasks, knowledge, attitude/relations, and appearance. An outline of general policies is provided, and police techniques and procedures are presented in 12 areas. These include vehicle inspection, emergency vehicle operation, police radio use, officer safety, arrest and control and search, response to alarm calls, vehicle stops (conventional and high risk), traffic control, traffic accident investigation, preliminary investigation, and courtroom appearance and demeanor. Reading list, descriptions of forms, and an officer trainee checklist.
