The Juvenile Awareness Education Program (JAEP) is a community-based demonstration project designed to educate youth about the futility of school disruptiveness, delinquency, and criminal behavior, while motivating them to strive for excellence and self-improvement.
Abstract
The 8-week program consists of weekly lectures and rap sessions that emphasize the importance of developing skills, realistic goal-setting, and involvement in prosocial activities. In this project, six Delaware high school students were trained in peer counseling and delinquency prevention and presented lectures to six students identified as extreme disciplinary problems. While peer counselors had no difficulty in assimilating training, their experiences with the troubled peers was mixed. The problem students were very intimidating, antisocial in their responses, and resistive. These problems were alleviated by having more peer counselors than problem students present at sessions. 1 note and 6 references.
