Truancy prevention requires participation by the community, the schools, the family, and the child. Public-private partnerships have been developed that have been successful in preventing and reducing delinquency. Special training for students by industry, alternative education programs, adopt-a-school programs, and peer counseling models provide examples of successful programs implemented in California through public-private cooperation. To continue and expand these types of programs, government leaders should reach out to the private sector for participation and support. Private-sector leaders should be invited to participate in networking to solve problems; partnerships should have paybacks that result in better communities, better trained employees, and reduced crime.
