Issues related to inservice and extramural training of group home staff serving youth with a variety of behavioral and emotional problems are summarized in this workshop report.
Abstract
The continuum of services for children and their families is described, and issues and concerns facing public and private agencies involved in residential child placements are discussed. With respect to these issues, four fundamental areas of training for child care workers are identified. These are implications of separation, placement as a process, differential use of placement resources, and self-awareness. The need for an eclectic approach to child care is noted. Recommendations for upgrading the quality of group child care and for increasing occupational satisfaction and organizational commitment of staff are provided. The who, what, where, when, and how of group home training is discussed from a management perspective. Financial aspects of group home operation are discussed, with a focus on licensing and training requirements. Hiring, initial placement, and retention of group home staff also are considered. Finally, recommendations for training cover interagency cooperation, standards and certification, program evaluation, curriculum, and staff support. A workshop program and list of participants are appended.
