Each center presents approximately four 2-day workshops per year. Using a training format devised by the American Corrections Association, the staffs of the centers conduct training sessions that detail the elements of center programs. The workshops provide for the observation of the center's model detention operations and facilities and discussions about implementing accredited programs in a variety of institutional settings. Although each resource center is a model of how detention should operate, each has specific strengths and priorities regarding resource uses. Strengths include comprehensive intake screening, a wide range of alternatives to detention, a variety of effective programs, excellent staff, volunteer involvement, staff training, and health care services. In addition to providing training resources, the centers are ideal sites for investigations into factors that determine the quality of life in a juvenile detention facility. 3 references.
