Abstract
HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS OF MILITARY AND POLICE INTELLIGENCE ACTIVITY INCLUDING PRESENT DAY ASPECTS OF THE POLICE INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY ARE EXPLORED. DISCUSSION OF INTELLIGENCE THEORY IS PRECEDED BY A DEFINITION OF TERMS AND CONCEPTS SUCH AS STRATEGIC INTELLIGENCE, COUNTERINTELLIGENCE, AND LINE INTELLIGENCE AS THEY APPLY TO A MODERN POLICE AGENCY. PRINCIPAL AREAS OF INTELLIGENCE INTEREST, ORGANIZED CRIME AND SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES, ARE EXAMINED AS THEY PERTAIN TO THE MUNICIPAL POLICE INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY. EMPHASIS IS ON INFORMANT RECRUITMENT, LIAISON PROGRAMS, AND CLIPPING SERVICES. INTERROGATION, SURVEILLANCE, AND INTELLIGENCE RECORD KEEPING ARE DISCUSSED. CRIME PREVENTION, A BY-PRODUCT OF INTELLIGENCE IS TREATED. ALSO PLANNING, DIRECTING ORGANIZING, FINANCING, AND OTHER SALIENT FEATURES OF ADMINISTRATION OF AN INTELLIGENCE UNIT ARE COVERED.
