The development of a speakers bureau by one local group of mediators shows how mediators can educate the public about options for mediation, promote individual mediation practices, and enhance the quality of mediation services.
Abstract
Speaking for Mediation (SFM) is a volunteer nonprofit association of mediators in Alameda County, Calif. Its public education project about mediation can be adopted by groups elsewhere. It includes the use of a training process, a packet for speakers, a process for evaluating potential speakers, a directory of mediation sources and consumer information, and a code of ethics. SFM solicits speaking engagements using mailings to selected individuals and groups, with followup by telephone as appropriate. The speakers describe the principles of practice common to most mediators as well as the diversity of mediation practices. They also disseminate ethical guidelines to help mediators and clients recognize and address ethical problems. Developing local groups like SFM could contribute to the discussion of policies for ensuring the highest quality mediation services. Some mediators have suggested the use of regulatory sanctions, while others prefer alternative policies to accomplish the same goal. SFM has taken no position on the regulation of mediation, but it aims to establish mediation as a responsible professional practice focusing on the nonregulatory approach of public education.
