This report identifies environmental impacts and suggests ways to mitigate them in the construction of the prison complex in Adelanto, Calif.
Abstract
Following a project description that encompasses location and setting, project objectives, and project characteristics, the report identifies significant environmental impacts in the areas of hydrology, vegetation, transportation and circulation, physical hazards, socioeconomic hazards, and Government services. Among the impacts are runoff from heavy rainfall, vegetation, the need for roads, earthquake shaking, inmate escapes and paroles, and the management of inmate visitors and family members. Impacts in Government services pertain to police protection and legal services, visitor services, schools, and water and sewer. The proposed project will create a housing demand in the surrounding community. Mitigation measures suggest ways to relieve the potential adverse impacts of prison construction and operations. Supplementary studies are appended. 28 references, 4 figures, and 12 tables.
