The characteristics of libraries and their communities are reviewed, and the relationships between these characteristics and crime patterns are discussed. The extent of library crime and property damage is examined; the impact (including financial and psychological effects) of vandalism, theft, and personal victimization is delineated. Security devices and options for the protection of perimeters, entry points, the interior, and personnel are described. Finally, a security checklist is provided that covers procedures, policies, and devices for preventing and controlling library crime and ensuring personal safety of employees and patrons.
