Correctional educators within a minimum custody correctional facility were asked to provide GED predictions (written estimations in months of when their students would complete the GED) for all students enrolled in school during the course of 1 school year.
Abstract
The Kaplan and Meir (1958) method for estimating survival distribution based on incorporating censor data was used in the analysis. It was determined that any male youthful offender, age 18-21, predicted to complete the GED in less than 5 months, stands a 50-50 chance of doing so, if given the opportunity. Such a finding requires a correctional administration response that is directed toward early identification of student offenders who have the ability to complete the GED, and to direct their educational experience within the time frame of their incarceration.
