This publication presents statistics on the following three aspects of the abuse of drugs controlled under Great Britain's 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act: (1) seizures of controlled drugs, (2) drug offenders, and (3) drug addicts reported to the Home Office.
Abstract
After increasing continuously since the mid-1970's, declines occurred in each of these areas between 1985 and 1986. Seizures of controlled drugs dropped 2 percent; drug offenders, 12 percent; and drug addicts, 8 percent. Heroin seizures dropped by 14 percent, resulting in a 39-percent drop in the amount seized. Heroin offenders declined by 31 percent, and new addicts dropped by 18 percent. However, these declines do not necessarily imply a fall in the level of drug misuse in society in general. Most heroin addicts were treated with methadone. The average age of addicts was 31, about the same as in recent years. Notes and data tables.
