Abstract
The status of drug abuse in the United States is reviewed; the role of the Drug Enforcement Administration in interdiction, prosecution, and demand reduction is discussed. Procedures involving increased military-civilian cooperation in drug investigation involving military personnel and installations are outlined. Special programs implemented by the New York City Police Department to combat drug abuse and trafficking are described. These include an anticrack unit, school education programs, a drug buyer car confiscation program, and buy-and-bust operations. Prevention, education, and enforcement strategies in other jurisdictions in the United States and Canada also are described that focus on special investigative units, use of seizure and forfeiture, and interagency cooperation. A California education program is described that aims at equipping elementary and junior high school students to resist peer and other social pressures to experiment with drugs and alcohol. Finally, the role of the Royal Canadian Mounted police in implementing a national drug strategy is described.
