The director of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), a judge, and educators from Salt Lake City and Atlanta describe alternative school programs for disruptive and delinquent students in hearings held by the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources.
Abstract
Following opening statements by committee members, the executive director of the Marmalade School in Salt Lake City describes that school's program for students who are chronically truant, have failed terribly in school, and who are often extremely delinquent. The program's underlying premise is that such students need exposure to experiences of success in order to change their behavior. The director of OJJDP surveys alternative correction programs supported by that agency as well as nonresidential alternative projects and public/private partnerships in this area. The director of Exodus, Inc., and the Cities in Schools Program in Atlanta traces the history of these alternative programs with attention to support from the private sector and community agencies. A juvenile court judge from Salt Lake City explains Utah's juvenile justice policies and his court's successful truancy intervention program. Prepared statements are provided.
