This study examined recidivism trends in inmates who completed vocational-technical training and a comparison group who did not receive vocational-technical training while incarcerated in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections between January 1982 and July 1986.
Abstract
The vocational-technical group consisted of 2,372 released inmates and the comparison group consisted of 9,851 released inmates. The study found that the vocational-technical group returned to the Department of Corrections faster than the comparison group, with 26 percent of vocational-technical graduates reincarcerated and 22 percent of the comparison group reincarcerated. The survival curve projected that at the end of 4.5 years, 65 percent of the comparison group will remain successful, while 62 percent of the vocational-technical group will remain successful. Thirty-nine percent of 1982 vocational-technical graduates had at least one reincarceration. The peak recidivism period for both groups was 7 to 14 months after release. Vocational-technical graduates may be at higher risk because their lack of job skills may indicate other deficit areas. 1 table and 1 graph.
