This report discusses the plan for a criminal justice information system in New York that will improve data collection and facilitate information sharing within functional criminal justice areas and among agencies and jurisdictions.
Abstract
Current regional computerization efforts include computer-aided dispatch, incident collection systems, arrest information systems, a warrant data base, a stolen and recovered property and evidence information system, and an administrative data entry system. Considerations for funding existing and new regional systems are provided, and criteria are presented for site selection, proposal evaluation, funding, and initial and long-term planning. The role of the multiyear Systems Improvements for Enhanced Community Safety program also is described. The program focuses on stimulating and coordinating regional data sharing by providing a manual warrant system; promoting an understanding of the benefits of computerized information sharing; providing technical expertise on software and hardware selection; and developing standardized forms, procedures, and definitions for statewide use.
