Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS): San Diego Police Department Training Bulletin

NCJ Number
108359
Date Published
1986
Length
4 pages
Annotation
This bulletin provides an understanding of how AIDS is transmitted.
Abstract
It points out that police officers are particularly concerned because some high-risk groups are frequently in contact with the criminal justice system. Next, it provides facts about AIDS -- the way it is transmitted, characteristics of the virus, and effects on the immune system -- and names the diseases to which it makes the body susceptible. It also describes symptoms, names groups which have the highest risk of contracting AIDS, and summarizes recommendations by the U.S. Public Health Service to minimize chances of contracting AIDS. Finally, it states that no law enforcement officer has contracted AIDS, pinpoints potential sources of accidental contamination, and sets out procedures to be followed.
