This paper describes research studies on the application of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) program to corrections and crime prevention.
Abstract
Physiological and psychological laboratory studies of the TM program that bear on inmate rehabilitation are briefly reviewed, followed by consideration of applied studies. Research projects in eight correctional settings are narratively and quantitatively reviewed. They indicate that regular practice of the TM program leads to positive changes in health, personality development, and behavior among inmates. Evidence of reduced recidivism among inmates instructed in the TM program is also indicated. Implications of the research for some correctional issues are also discussed. (Publisher abstract)
