This curriculum package presents a model for drug abuse prevention and education based on the idea that building a strong individual is the best defense against drug abuse.
Abstract
The curriculum is structured to be taught in grades 5 through 9, the age level at which basic attitudes about substance use are formed. Designed for a 10-to 12 week period, the curriculum aims to strengthen students' self-esteem and self-image while enhancing their coping skills. It encourages young people to recognize and pursue 'Life Positive' behaviors. Topics include trust, communication, life affirmations, assertiveness, decisionmaking, family living, drugs, alcohol, and the impact of the media. An overview, list of goals, lesson plan, and activities are included for each topic. The information for the facilitator also explains how to set up situations that encourage student participation, lead students to self-discovery, and enhance their decisionmaking skills.
