The components of effective leadership, leadership style and style characteristics, and how police leadership pertains to organizational competence and development are examined. A paradigm for police management is presented that includes managerial skills, the managerial lens, Theory Y, forcefield analysis, interpersonal style, and work are defined, and the consequences that result when these roles are not fulfilled are discussed. Major Machiavellian concepts are reviewed, and their relevance to police leadership is examined. Realities that can adversely affect the police chief's authority, power and influence are summarized.
