This article explores security- and safety-related applications for mobile robots.
Abstract
The few security-related robots existing today possess autonomous capabilities. For instance, the 'Sentry,' developed by Denning Mobile Robotics, Inc., works with an integrated security system, including electronics, video, and human guards. All information, including pictures, is relayed to the robot's five onboard computers, which then transmit it to a communication station where a guard takes over. In the realm of Government-related robotics research, Odetics' six-legged walking robot is a likely candidate for maintenance and surveillance applications in nuclear facilities. It also has potential for security applications, like patrolling in uneven terrain. At 21st Century Robotics, a Tactical Support Robot (TSR) has been marketed to the military for explosive disposal, firefighting, hazardous material handling, perimeter security, and SWAT-type operations. Smaller educational robotics systems have been applied to home security. It seems likely that robots will impact security as an important complement to human ability. Photographs.
