PART ONE OF PROCEEDINGS OF 1973 CONFERENCE DIRECTED TOWARD CORRECTING COMMUNITY PROBLEMS WHICH ENCOURAGE DRUG ABUSE.
Abstract
THE SECOND CONFERENCE ON ALTERNATIVES TO DRUG ABUSE (ADAC II) WAS HELD IN VIRGINIA ON JANUARY 9-12, 1973. IT WAS DIRECTED TOWARDS THE FORMULATION OF A COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY FOR THE DISSEMINATION OF PROGRAMS OF RESCUE AND PREVENTION IN THE FIELDS OF EDUCATION, CRIMINAL JUSTICE, THE COMMUNITY, MEDIA, AND VOLUNTEER SERVICE. THE CONFERENCE WAS BASED ON THE PREMISE THAT DRUG ABUSE IS A SYMPTOM, AND THEREFORE, IT IS THE UNDERLYING PROBLEMS IN THE COMMUNITY WHICH ENCOURAGE DRUG ABUSE THAT MUST BE DEALT WITH. THE EMPHASIS OF THE CONFERENCE WAS ON BUILDING A MORE EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FAMILIES AND SCHOOLS, INTENSIFYING MEDIA USAGE, ENGAGING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, UTILIZING VOLUNTEERS, AND COORDINATING COMMUNITY EFFORTS WITH THOSE OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. THE CONFEREES DRAFTED THE BYLAWS FOR A PRIVATE, NON-PROFIT CORPORATION TO CARRY OUT THE ALFY (A NEW LIFE FOR YOU) CONCEPT. ALFY WAS DESIGNED TO CREATE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS, AND TO HELP COMMUNITIES IMPLEMENT PROGRAMS.
