Abstract
FOLLOWING A SHORT INTRODUCTION TO THE PROBLEM OF DRUG ABUSE, GENERAL DESCRIPTIONS OF TYPES OF ALTERNATIVES AND EXPLANATIONS OF THEIR NEED ARE GIVEN. THE ALTERNATIVES ARE DISCUSSED WITH RESPECT TO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, EDUCATION, AND THE COMMUNITY. BRIEF SUMMARIES OF A NUMBER OF SPECIFIC PROGRAMS WHICH EXEMPLIFY VARIOUS TYPES OF SUCCESSFUL ALTERNATIVES ARE FURNISHED.
