This review of international cooperation in drug control, focusing on the United Nations' contribution, also discusses the nature of drug abuse and drug trafficking, their consequences, and prevention measures.
Abstract
The discussion of drug abuse addresses its prevalence among juveniles, causes, the drug subculture, current trends in the use of various drugs, and acquired immune deficiency syndrome among drug users. The overview of international drug trafficking focuses on drug trafficking networks and legal and judicial problems. The consequences of drug abuse encompass the home, school, workplace, crime, and the security and integrity of nations and regions. Drug prevention measures deal primarily with awareness and education. After reviewing the history of international cooperation in drug control, the booklet details the United Nations' (UN) involvement in drug control, with attention to protocols, conventions, and the 1987 International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. A separate chapter describes how various components of the UN organization contribute to international drug control.
