An outline of procedures for handling inmates with AIDS, suspected AIDS or AIDS-Related Complex (ARC) covers the following: identification and evaluation of new inmates and those already in the system, housing, infection control measures, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, transporting inmates, laundry control, and food service. The bulletin suggests developing guidelines to address the following legal issues: testing a suspected AIDS victim without the patient's consent; whether patient consent is required before medical information about the AIDS condition can be released to correctional staff; the correctional health authority's responsibility when an inmate with AIDS/ARC is released into the community to communicate this information to community health agencies. Topics that staff and inmate AIDS education programs should cover are detailed. The report includes a list of AIDS publications available from the Public Health Service, as well as photocopies of AIDS informational materials.
