DESCRIPTIONS OF COMMUNITY-BASED DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT PROGRAMS, COLLECTED AS A RESULT OF A 'GRAPEVINE' SYSTEM OF REFERRALS FROM FIELD EXPERTS.
Abstract
ALTERNATIVE STRATEGIES FOR COMBATTING DRUG ABUSE WERE EVOLVED FROM A NATIONWIDE NETWORK OF PERSONAL REFERRALS MADE BY EXPERTS IN THE FIELD. THESE STRATEGIES AROSE FROM THE PERSPECTIVE THAT DRUG ABUSE IS A SYMPTOM, AND FROM THE ATTEMPTS TO DISCOVER THOSE UNDERLYING PROBLEMS IN COMMUNITIES WHICH ENCOURAGE WIDESPREAD DRUG ABUSE AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE. THE INITIAL CONTACTS FOR THIS SURVEY WERE DRAWN FROM AMONG THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE FIRST ALTERNATIVES TO DRUG ABUSE CONFERENCE. THEY WERE ASKED TO RECOMMEND EXEMPLARY PROGRAMS IN THE AREAS OF EDUCATION, CRIMINAL JUSTICE, AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT WHICH HELD PROMISE FOR SUCCESS IN PREVENTING OR TREATING DRUG ABUSE. SUBSEQUENT REFERRALS, IN CONJUNCTION WITH A LITERATURE SEARCH, PRODUCED A CONSENSUS CONCERNING THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS. THOSE PROGRAMS ARE CITED IN THIS BOOKLET, UNDER GENERAL HEADINGS, WITH A BRIEF DESCRIPTION, THE PROGRAM ADDRESS, AND THE NAME OF A PERSON TO CONTACT FOR INFORMATION. FOR EXAMPLE, TWO PROGRAMS, LISTED UNDER THE HEADING 'YOUTH INVOLVED WITH INCARCERATED DELINQUENTS', ARE CONCERNED WITH FOSTERING SUPPORTIVE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN YOUNG PEOPLE AND JUVENILE DELINQUENTS, BOTH DURING AND AFTER THEIR INCARCERATION. THE PROGRAMS ALL SHARE THE COMMON OBJECTIVES OF BUILDING A BETTER HOME LIFE, CREATING A MORE STIMULATING SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT, AND PROVIDING A COMMUNITY WITH AMPLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR RECREATION AND YOUTH EMPLOYMENT. FOR FURTHER REFERENCE TO THIS SURVEY SEE THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND ALTERNATIVES TO DRUG ABUSE CONFERENCE, NCJ-10874 AND NCJ-10875. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED) (SNI ABSTRACT)
