EXAMINATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BURGLARY AND THE TIME OF OCCURRENCE, THE LAND USE OF THE TARGET, AND THE LOCATION OF THE TARGET.
Abstract
THE LOCATION OF THIS STUDY IS UNIVERSITY CITY, MISSOURI, ADJACENT TO THE CENTRAL WEST END OF METROPOLITAN ST. LOUIS. A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF COLLECTED OFFENSE STATISTICS REVEALED THAT BURGLARY IS FUNCTIONALLY RELATED TO SEVERAL ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS WHICH ARE SOCIAL IN NATURE. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT BURGLARY OF DIFFERENT LAND USES OCCURS AT DIFFERENT TIMES AND AT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. BURGLARY AS A PHENOMENON IS MORE SPECIFIED THAN GENERALIZED IN REGARD TO GEOGRAPHY, TIME, AND BUILDING TYPE. FOR EXAMPLE, ONLY CERTAIN LOCATIONS OR SECTORS ARE HIT, MOST BARGLARIES OCCUR DURING THE DAY, MORE SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENCES ARE HIT THAN MULTIPLEFAMILY RESIDENCES, AND MORE MULTIPLE-FAMILY RESIDENCES ARE HIT THAN BUSINESSES. SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS OF THESE FINDINGS ARE DISCUSSED WITH RESPECT TO UNIVERSITY CITY. APPENDED MATERIAL INCLUDES DEFINITIONS, SAMPLE POLICE DOCUMENTS, AND MATERIALS USED IN THE INVESTIGATION.
