Employee theft is a diverse problem that requires multifaceted solutions.
Abstract
Hardware solutions have included closed-circuit television, gate access control, package checks, and locks. However, such solutions fail to attack the root of the problem: a desire to steal from the workplace. Such solutions also may convey an adversarial message and fail to gain the support of employees. A well-rounded security management program should include employee awareness activities that create a corporate culture aware of and dedicated to preventing business abuse. This requires a clear formulation of company theft policy, its dissemination, and its enforcement. Other components of a comprehensive loss prevention program may include a telephone service through which employee thefts may be reported (often with a reward for the informant), careful preemployment screening, fraud audits, and investigations. Supplemental materials provide guidelines for setting up an employee awareness program, list factors in the corporate culture that may increase or reduce the potential for employee fraud and theft prevention resources, and describe additional loss prevention procedures.
