This report provides data on runaway and homeless youth and highlights 1984 activities of the Administration for Children, Youth, and Families (ACYF) in funding shelters, a national hotline, and other services for runaways.
Abstract
An introduction surveys the history of the Runaway Youth Act, statistics on runaways, and types of youth served by the Runaway and Homeless Youth Program (RHYP). The report discusses centers funded in Fiscal Year 1984, the clients served, and the services offered by the centers. Also described is the National Runaway Switchboard, a toll-free, neutral channel of communication and help. Major activities undertaken to support the RHYP are summarized, including a management information system maintained on clients, networking activities, and collaborative efforts with other organizations. In summary, the ACYF awarded 265 basic center grants to runaway and homeless youth programs and funded 28 coordinated networks in 21 States. Based on data provided by centers, services were provided to an estimated 305,500 youth. The National Runaway Switchboard served an estimated 250,000 youth and families in 1984.
