Abstract
After reviewing criminological theories, the text discusses the importance of self-development as the principal tool of the criminal justice 'helper.' A chapter on interviewing and interrogation considers the purpose of the criminal justice interview, interviewing techniques, interviewing the client and the victim, and interrogating the client. Chapters on the presentence investigation report, practice cases, and assessment tools are followed by chapters on nondirective and directive counseling theory and practice. The book provides indepth coverage of counseling with alcoholics and other drug abusers, sex offenders, schizophrenics, and intellectually deficient persons. Overall, the text emphasizes the importance of interviews to evaluate clients and adapt counseling theories and techniques to their needs. In guiding students in the preparation of presentence reports, the book provides the various forms and scales required for such a study. The book concludes with a discussion of community agencies and volunteers as treatment aids. Chapter summaries and references, sample forms, scales, and subject index.
