This report describes the population and activities of death row inmates in New Jersey as well as the execution procedures and costs.
Abstract
There are presently 18 inmates who have been sentenced to death pursuant to N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3. They are kept isolated from other inmates, allowed one noncontact visit a week with their families, as well as vists with attorneys as needed, and given treatment and chaplain services. Each inmate will be provided with a copy of rules and procedures 15 days prior to the execution. Witnesses, clergy, representatives of the media, and medical personnel are permitted to attend. Day to day management of the Capital Sentence Unit (CSU) is the responsibility of the Unit Management Team, under the direction of the Superintendent, State Prison, Trenton. Total personnel cost of operating the CSU is $465,355.
