This drug prevention guide is designed to help parents, educators, and employers to recognize symptoms of drug abuse, the hazardous effects of using drugs, and how to deal effectively with drug abuse problems.
Abstract
Twenty-five multiple-choice or true-false questions test the reader's knowledge about drugs of abuse. The guide's first section instructs parents, schools, students, and employers in what they can do about drug abuse. Information for parents covers parent-child relationships, setting behavioral limits, and signs of drug abuse. Advice for school officials addresses drug education for teachers and students and school policies regarding enforcement and referrals. Guidelines for students focus on positive peer pressure and alternatives to drug use. Information for employers includes a formula for calculating what drug abusing employees are costing the business and suggestions for procedures to reduce employee drug abuse. Remaining sections of the guide describe the nature and effects of the major categories of potentially abusive drugs: cannabis, narcotics, stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, inhalants, prescription drugs, and alcohol. A glossary of slang terms and 54 references.
