The Alternative Living Scheme (ALS) supports ID people in the community who are living independently. Procedural agreements between the IHS and the police are designed to establish cooperative procedures for dealing with ID persons in the ALS who may be involved in a police intervention. The agreement encompasses police procedures for dealing with various types of offenses. The agreement mandates role activities for the senior police officer, the community liaison and development officer, and a representative from ALS. The police agree to training regarding the management of ID persons, and the community liaison and development officer agrees to conduct liaison and educational activities that foster improved police handling of ID persons in cooperation with IHS staff. A representative from the ALS agrees to cooperate with the community liaison development officer to ensure that ASL staff are informed of procedures to be followed in the working agreement.
