AIDS cases have been reported in 30 of Michigan's 83 counties, although 44 percent of the cases are in Detroit. Blind and anonymous seroprevalence studies in selected populations have shown an 0.8-percent positive human immunodeficiency antibody rate among incoming prisoners at State and county correctional facilities, a rate of 8-percent among patients in drug abuse care units, and a 2.1-percent rate among clients from clinics for sexually transmitted diseases. Each local health department has an AIDS coordinator to inform and educate about AIDS. The Michigan Department of Public Health has undertaken many activities related to prevention and control of AIDS during the last year. These include a case reporting system, laboratory services, general education, education of high-risk groups, expansion of counseling and testing centers, planning for training of health care providers, collaboration with other agencies, and planning for a comprehensive care system.
