Fiber optics make possible a whole new range of solutions to certain security problems.
Abstract
For instance, perimeter security for maximum security installations can be improved with a serrated metal tape with a fiber-optic cable running through its center. Moreover, a fiber-optic net can be incorporated as a security sensor in vaults, inside walls, around perimeters, and even under water. It is also possible to combine tapes or mesh with a fiber-optic communication system to signal an alarm upon any attempt at interference. Events that cause volumetric sensors, proximity sensors, and CCTV systems to fail or send false alarms do not affect fiber-optic equipment. Fiber-optic equipment can also be deployed in hazardous situations, since it will not overheat, short-circuit, or spark. In addition, control electronics that communicate with the installation through fiber-optic cable can be placed away from the site, increasing the security level. 2 photographs.
