Although progress has been made in the juvenile justice system's identification and management of juveniles with learning disabilities, there is still a significant lack of communication about the scope of the problem and the range of solutions.
Abstract
The activities of the Foundation for Children with Learning Disabilities have acted as a catalyst to make the juvenile justice judiciary and the public aware of the effect of learning differences and undetected learning disabilities on delinquent behavior. A significant problem remaining, however, is a lack of communication between the medical and legal communities about the nature of the problem and how it may best be handled. Written communications should be produced to explain relevant medical terminology and its application in the legal and judicial process. Various pilot projects have focused on identifying and remedying juvenile learning disabilities. Such pilot programs must be translated into programs throughout the Nation's juvenile justice systems.
