He identifies several areas of concern for professionals in correctional education: (1) the educational needs of inmates must be met within an appropriately secure setting; (2) education must be seen as a priority in the correctional setting; (3) correctional educators must become leaders and share their knowledge of what works in adult education with the larger community; (4) and correctional educators must develop model programs to address the special needs of subgroups such as the developmentally disabled, the mentally ill, and non-English speakers. The author also advises the Correctional Education Association to develop clearinghouses enabling those who are implementing effective correctional education programs to share information and expertise. Finally, the author advocates integrating vocational and life skills training with academic programs for prisoners.
