Abstract
Data for this report came from law enforcement agencies in Colorado and in other jurisdictions as well as from confidential informants and the files of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The report defines organized crime in Colorado as a group of persons who are associated for the purpose of engaging in a continuing course of criminal activity for financial gain and power. The report estimates that organized crime in Colorado is a multimillion dollar business. Several major organized crime groups operating in Colorado are identified and divided into six categories: (1) local organized crime groups; (2) outlaw motorcycle groups; (3) Asian organized crime groups; (4) Marielitos (Cuban) criminal groups; (5) white-collar crime groups; and (6) the Colacurcio family organization. According to the report, these organizations conduct their criminal activity under the cover of legitimate businesses. The report concludes by pointing out the threat that organized crime poses to legitimate businesses and how it sets the stage for political and governmental corruption. Recommendations for combating organized crime in Colorado are included. Charts.
