Abstract
Materials document the incidence, causes, prevention, and treatment of child abuse. Particular attention is given to the high incidence of abuse-related fatalities and the monitoring of child abuse cases by protective services. Results of research into maltreatment fatalities are presented, and the relationship between scientific research and public policymaking is discussed. Human Development Services initiatives in the area of child abuse prevention and treatment are outlined, and the role of the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect is discussed. Additional issues considered relate to child health care, abuse reporting, and interagency coordination. Reauthorization of the Act is recommended, together with calls for increased funding for both research and prevention and treatment services.
