This article discusses the need for police officers to learn and practice effective defensive techniques, both unarmed and using a baton, against knife attacks.
Abstract
Self-defense skill using a baton and unarmed techniques are discussed. Techniques when using a baton include retreating to one side or backward; striking the knife-holding arm with a baton, or hitting a vital spot such as throat, eyes or ears are suggested countermeasures against a straight lunging stab, wide or tight slash from side to side, or above or below. Punching, kicking, and heavy blows are described as tactics to use when unarmed. Signs to watch for when approaching suspicious individuals include hand movement towards pockets, belt, inside long sleeve shirts or jackets, pant or boot cuffs, or back of the neck where knives often are secured for swift withdrawal.
