The report notes that the existing barrier Asians have against police officers in general must be removed, and trust must be developed. This can be accomplished through education, communication between Asians and non-Asians, including law enforcement personnel and city officials. Activities implemented to discuss these changes included a brainstorming session with members of the Chamber of Commerce Asian American Committee, indepth interviews and questionnaires presented to Asians and non-Asians on an individual basis, and group sessions involving management and middle-management personnel. Changes, examined include community involvement with Asians, leadership by example, increased Asian intelligence information, the use of Asian employees and volunteers (public relations and interpreters), and a break down of fear of police. Cultural interaction events, seminars, special research units, and a special agent task force are ways in which these changes can be implemented. (Author abstract modified)
