State Police and highway patrol departments in the United States were surveyed to determine the number of agencies using autoloader weapons or contemplating their use.
Abstract
Of the 49 departments surveyed, 36 responded. Findings show that six States have armed all of their patrol troopers with 9mm semi-automatic autoloaders. Two States are presently arming all recruits with semi-automatics and are gradually phasing in present officers. One State arms its regular troopers with .357 Magnum revolvers but its felony officers with semi-automatics. Several States arm their tactical, undercover, and Criminal Investigation Division (CID) officers with semi-automatics but uniformed officers with revolvers. Of the States that permit officers to carry a second or backup weapon, none that issue revolvers as a primary weapon will allow automatics as a secondary or off-duty gun. Thirteen States have a proposed change to semi-automatics under study or implementation. A breakdown of State-by-State comments and results is included.
