This 1979-80 study examined the dynamics of inmate sexual exploitation and coercion in a California medium-security facility (2,500 inmates) using structured questionnaires and indepth interviews with inmates, correctional officers, and prison administrators.
Abstract
The study first explores the nature of prison sexual exploitation, the prison sexual scene, and racial and ethnic differences pertaining to the sexual behavior of the heterosexual and bisexual 'jockers' (those who assume the dominant role in sexual encounters in the prison). The second major section of the book focuses on the inmate sexual relationships which pair jockers with effeminate homosexuals or submissive heterosexual young inmates. The discussion then turns to the experiences of the 'punks' (heterosexual and bisexual inmates forced to assume a sexually submissive role) as well as the sexual behavior and attitudes of the self-defined homosexual inmates. This discussion distinguishes between the different types of inmate homosexuals. The concluding section first addresses the concerns of the inmates and the attitudes of prison personnel regarding inmate sexual exploitation. The book concludes with suggestions for prison policy regarding inmate sexual behavior and reviews the impact of reforms intended to reduce inmate sexual exploitation. 44 notes, questionnaires, 21 tables, a subject index.
